Welcome to the Old Town Christmas Market in Stockholm. At the Christmas Market you will find a lot of Swedish Christmas and other specialities such as Swedish Christmas sweets, smoked sausages, smoked reindeer, elk meat, handmade knitted caps, candy floss, glögg (mulled wine), a range of Swedish handicrafts and decorative arts of high-quality workmanship and much much more. There are a total of more than 40 stalls to explore.
The Old Town Christmas Market has it‘s origin in the medieval markets at Stockholm and todays Christmas market started alreday in 1837. With the exeption of the years 1907 - 1914 it has been a ongoing tradition until present time. This makes it the oldest Christmas market in Stockholm and Sweden.
The history of Christmas markets goes back to the late Middle Ages in the German-speaking part of Europe and in many parts of the former Holy Roman Empire that includes many eastern regions of France and Switzerland. The oldest might be Dresden‘s Strietzelmarkt from 1434. But even in Sweden the first Christmas markets started during the medieval times and the very first was held at the main square in the Old Town of Stockholm in 1523. So maybe the Old Town Christmas Market of Stockholm is one of the oldest in Europe.
The Old Town Christmas Market is open for all people during the month before Christmas Eve. The people renting the stalls are all entrepreneurs and are selected to give the you a wide range of traditional Swedish products, with a focus on handicraft and unique items such as elk meath, smoked reindeer i.e.
